Frequent Flyer Credit Cards
Frequent flyer credit cards are a great way to earn miles faster for a free trip. There are several types of cards in this category, each offering different types of benefits.
With frequent flyer cards, you earn frequent flyer miles on your favorite airline and their partners. Most frequent flyer credit cards come with generous introductory free miles offers, in some cases offering up to 20,000 bonus miles when you make your first purchase. That is almost the total miles needed for a free round trip domestic ticket! If you are looking to add miles to a specific frequent flyer account, this type of card is a great choice.
If you don’t want to be limited to one particular carrier, airline credit cards let you earn points that can be used to obtain free tickets on over 250 major airlines. This means that you are less limited by seat availability when booking for your free flight. The points you earn can also be redeemed for cash back, free hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, and so on.
A typical award is one point for each dollar spent, but some airline miles cards give double miles or extra points for certain types of purchases, e.g., in supermarkets, gas stations and drugstores. Some cards even award points on the miles you fly, when you pay for the ticket with that card. Many air miles credit cards also offer sign-up bonus points when you make your first purchase after your credit card application has been accepted.
It is well worth your time to compare credit cards to find the card that is right for you. Things to look for are how many points or miles are needed to get a free flight; whether there is a limit to earnings you can accumulate per year; and whether the points or miles expire. And as with any type of rewards card, your earnings are quickly undermined by finance charges if you carry a balance forward from month to month.
